You trusted you would be safe on the deck. You trusted the vacation home would be safe for your family. You trusted someone would hear your cries for help. You trusted the doctors would mend your injured pelvis and bones. While your body heals, how will your mind heal to trust again in certain situations?
I was lucky with my escalator accident. It just stopped and my body suffered whiplash systems. But after two years, I can’t get on an escalator. I don’t trust them. But I can always find the elevator.
Wishing you a refuah shlemah. Our lives and health are SO fragile and vulnerable. Thx especially for writing this during your recovery, but maybe take a few more days off??
Jay, I thought that was a picture of a mikvah with a story about a health scare and subsequent immersion. Glad you’re alright. Thank you for sharing the story of your accident—it sounds shocking as all accidents are. Your political take, as always, is comforting, relatable, and reliable. Refuah Shelemah, Naomi
Jay, I’m sorry that you went through this scary and painful accident, but like you said, I’m glad that it wasn’t worse and that you’re recovering. Many blessings for a full and timely recovery. Refuah Shelemah. Interestingly, the subject of your post is a subject I was teaching about last night and I guess I’ll echo Rabbi Harold Kushner that the stuff that happens doesn’t have an intrinsic meaning but we make the meaning. Likewise Victor Frankl saying that the important question isn’t what’s the meaning but that we are the one being questioned. Take it easy and feel better fast!
Oh my! We read “El na, rafa na la” this week — wishing you a speedy and comfortable recovery. So sorry you are going through this; but so very grateful you will be healed, soon, in body and spirit.
Thank you for sharing this story; most people don't share so widely their feelings & thoughts after such a serious accident & reversal of course. I appreciate your insights & still leading the way forward.
Wow, I don't read Substack for a while and *this* happens?! I'm so glad you escaped death however many times it was throughout your ordeal. I so appreciate your wisdom and ruminations (as well as your meditations on TPH -- I've loosened my jaw and taken many a nap listening to your words). Take it slow.
Wowowow. Thank God you’re alive. And thank you for the mid flight report. It reminds me of my own time recovering from (slightly less) life-threatening circumstances and helps me to feel into that state of gratitude once again. Refuah shlemah.
Jay,
Sorry to hear about your accident. Scary situation. Hope the healing process goes well.
Get well soon!

So sorry. So glad you are alive and showing up. Stunned by the suddenness. Ride on the flood of gratitude and the good wishes of all
who know you.
Thanks Patti
